A Loss for NZ's Fashion Industry

I was planning on really getting this blog up and running during the Covid-19 lockdown, but truthfully, I've been finding it really difficult to focus on anything, let alone articulate my thoughts into a nice and concise piece of writing for the internet.

It feels quite surreal, to be honest. I am an introvert, and have truthfully been enjoying my time at home with no social obligations.

Today, however, I woke up to some heartbreaking news. Bauer Media, publisher of Fashion Quarterly, Metro Mag, Women's Weekly, NZ Home & Garden, and many more magazines, is closing for good. This made everything seem more real. Whilst magazines are not at the centre of most people's lives, that is so many jobs lost, and NZ has such a limited magazine scene as it is. Fashion Quarterly is the centre of the NZ fashion industry, and many people, like myself, have memories of stealing it from their Mum as a kid. Over the past few years the fashion scene in NZ has really grown into something bigger, and more international, and many of our brands have been at the heart of sustainability in fashion. The fact that FQ will no longer be around is unbelievable.

This is a very dramatic and frivolous thing to get upset about during this truly difficult time. But for me, this is proving how different our world will be, once this pandemic is over. It takes a time like this to realise how much the little things impact your daily life. Your favourite local coffee shop may be forced to close. The second hand shop where you always find a great book. Or, your favourite magazine may no longer be around.

The virus is terrifying because it is killing people, but for those of us that make it through, we will continue living our lives with slight alterations, and possibly having to forgo those little pleasures we were able to indulge in before.

The loss of a magazine is not even the slightest bit worrying for many New Zealanders, but for me, this is a huge change to the fashion industry, and my career path. Hopefully we can stamp out this virus before any other businesses are forced to close. It's a tough time for everyone.

But for now, all we can do is stay safe at home. <3
